Inspiration for songs comes from many things. Phrases I hear during my work day, or events in my life can both stir something up. Sometimes I’m just noodling around on my guitar and something will click and then I’ll add lyrics. Other times I actually sit down to write a song about something or nothing.

I grew up listening to Elvis first and then the Beatles. These two are probably my biggest influences. Later I really began to like a wide variety of rock and country. Eric Clapton is definitely one of my favorites, along with others like Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, and really a host of others. I love all kinds of guitar music. One of my favorite guitar albums is “No More Mr. Nice Guy” by Steve Wariner, with guests like Eddie Van Halen, Vince Gill, Leo Kotke, and a few others. Of course I love to hear stuff by Chet Atkins who influenced and inspired so many.

Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn have also been favorites of mine. My son has introduced me to many newer styles of music. Among them I really like Rooney, Cake, and a piano player by the name of Ben Folds.
My stint with the Flippers also helped to widen the scope of my influences. The Flippers was a nine piece band with four horn players. We did songs by Chicago, Stevie Wonder, Tower of Power, Sly, Blood Sweat and Tears, etc. All of these have influenced me but I’m afraid if you listen closely to my songs you’ll either hear a little British style rock, or maybe even a little Roy Orbison creeping in there.

I’m always trying to improve as a guitar player, singer, and songwriter. Of these three the most important to me at this time in my life is the songwriting. If the song is no good it doesn’t matter to anyone how well you play it.
